3. Indian Space Research Organization appointed Dr. Shankarasubramanian K as Principal Scientist for Aditya-L1 mission. It is solar mission from India. Shankarasubramanian contributed to ISRO's Astrosat and Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2 missions.

It will be placed in a halo orbit around the first Lagrange point L1 of the Sun-Earth system. The main purpose of having a satellite around this L1 point is to continuously observe the Sun. This position offers the greatest advantage of constant observation of solar activity.

Aditya-L1 will carry seven payloads. It is capable of observing the photosphere, chromosphere and outer layers of the Sun's corona using electromagnetic and particle detectors.

All four payloads have a direct view of the Sun from L1's unique vantage point. The remaining three payloads will carry out in situ studies of particles and fields at the Lagrange point L1.

Dr. Shankarasubramanian is a Senior Solar Scientist working at UR Rao Satellite Center Bangalore. He received his PhD in Physics from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, from Bangalore University.

Dr. Shankarasubramanian's areas of research interest are in solar magnetic field, optics and instrumentation. He contributed to the Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2 missions in several capacities. Currently heading the Space Astronomy Group of URSC. SAG is engaged in developing scientific payloads for the upcoming missions of Aditya-L1, EXPOSAT and science payload on the Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module.

Dr. Shankarasubramanian was also the Principal Investigator for one of the X-ray payloads on Aditya-L1. K also heads the Aditya-L1 Science Working Group, which includes members from various institutions in India engaged in solar science research.
