ready to move into their new habitat in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National

Cheetah:
The
last cheetah died in 1947 in Korea district of present day Chhattisgarh. It was
formerly a part of Madhya Pradesh in India and this cheetah species was
declared extinct in India in 1952. According to reports the leopard has lost 90
percent of its global habitat in the last 100 years. Additionally, of the 31
populations of the cheetah, only 100-200 remain, their habitat steadily
declining. In 2009, the 'African Cheetah Introduction Project in India' was
formulated. Plans to introduce the big cat were made in November last year in
Kuno National Park. It has suffered a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr.
Larry Marker has been a consultant to the Government of India on the Cheetah
Rehabilitation Project for 12 years. Dr Larry Marker said it was the first such
trans-continental project to be undertaken. Leopard has become extinct in many
countries due to human activities. So it is our responsibility to bring it back
and preserve it.
