International Day for Eradication of Poverty is celebrated worldwide on 17th
October every year. A day to raise awareness of the global problem of poverty
and how it undermines human rights and human dignity. On the 35th anniversary
of the World Day to End Extreme Poverty and the 30th anniversary of the
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, this year, the UN honors
people living in poverty and their daily courage and raises awareness of why
global cooperation is important. Poverty alleviation is essential.
The
theme of the International Day is Respect for All in Practice. Human dignity is
not only a fundamental right but also the basis of all other fundamental
rights. Today, many people living in persistent poverty feel their dignity
denied and disrespected.
The
day is recognized by recognizing the efforts and daily struggle of the people
living in poverty and giving them an opportunity to express their needs and
concerns to the public. Poverty is a global problem that requires a global
focus for its end.
The
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed since 17
October 1987 to commemorate the victims of poverty, violence and hunger. Over a
million people gathered at the Trocadero in Paris.
Declaring
poverty as a violation of human rights, there is a need to come together and
rectify this situation. A memorial stone was unveiled with these beliefs.
Replicas of this memorial stone are found all over the world, where people
gather to mark this day on October 17 every year.
On
December 22, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution
47/196, declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of
Poverty.
