2.1991
Places of Worship Act:
The Places of Worship Act of 1991 was passed by Parliament during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. This Act was brought to promote peace, harmony and brotherhood.
The
main objective of the Act is to maintain the religious character of any place
on 15th August 1947 (at independence). The Act prohibits changing any place of
worship or altering the religious character of any place from its status. The
main purpose behind this act is to promote peace and harmony in the country and
control and regulate sensitive matters like religious hatred. The
Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri case was exempted from the provisions of the Act.
India
did not have a constitutional government before August 15, 1947. During the
medieval period when a temple was accused of vandalism the rule of law did not
exist and politics was characterized by an expansionist attitude. Medieval
politics was very different from modern Indian political existence.
The
Court held that the Places of Worship Act 1991 was necessary to uphold our
commitment to secularism under the Constitution of India.
