1. The Ministry of Home Affairs has successfully completed the Mother Tongue Survey with field videography of 576 languages ​​and dialects across the country. According to the Home Ministry's annual report for 2021-22, it is planned to set up a web archive at the National Informatics Center to preserve and analyze the original flavor of each indigenous vernacular.

The Matrubhasha Survey of India project was successfully completed with field videography of 576 mother tongues, the report said. The Home Ministry said that the Linguistic Survey of India has been a regular research activity in the country since the 6th Five Year Plan.

The Home Ministry said several new initiatives have been taken for the smooth conduct of the mega exercise, including the use of advanced geospatial technology in the upcoming census, which was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-census mapping activities include preparation and updating of maps showing administrative divisions of states and UTs, districts, sub-districts, villages, towns and wards in towns to ensure proper coverage of the entire geographical area of ​​the country. Efforts are also underway to disseminate census results through web-based interactive maps. Preparation work has already started in this direction.

Jurisdictional changes occurring in the country after Census 2011 up to December 31, 2019 have been updated in the geo-referenced database and further update is ongoing as the freezing date has been extended to June 30, 2022.

More than 6 lakh maps (district, sub-district, village level) have been prepared and uploaded on the internal portal for census workers and these will be further updated and finalized as per jurisdictional changes till June, 2022.

For the first time in the country, House Listing Block Mobile Mapping App has been introduced for geo-referencing of all enumeration blocks of the upcoming census and National and Master Trainers have been given necessary training on the same.

About Mother Tongue Survey:

The Mother Tongue Survey of India project was implemented by the Central Government to conduct surveys of mother tongues consistently returned over 2 or more census decades. It also registers the linguistic features of the selected languages.

According to the 2011 Linguistic Census released in 2018, more than 19,500 languages ​​or dialects are spoken as mother tongues in India. After linguistic examination of the census data, correction and rationalization, these were classified into 121 mother tongues. Mother tongue is the designation given by the respondent of the survey. It does not have to be the same as the original language medium.

43.6 percent of the population or approximately 52.8 crore people declare Hindi as their mother tongue making it the most spoken mother tongue in India. The second most spoken mother tongue is Bengali. 9.7 crore people or 8 percent of the population speak this language.

 

2. Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved India's final Sovereign Green Bonds Framework. This endorsement further strengthens India's commitment to the nationally determined cooperation goals.

The draft comes in the footsteps of India's commitments under the Panchamrita elaborated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow in November, 2021. The announcement made by the Central Finance Commission in the Union Budget for the financial year 2022-23 has been approved. The minister said that sovereign green bonds will be issued to mobilize resources for green projects.

It will help attract global and domestic investments in eligible green projects. The proceeds from the issuance of such bonds can be implemented in public sector projects that help reduce the carbon intensity of the economy.

A green bond is a debt instrument used to finance green projects. This usually involves renewable energy, clean transportation, sustainable water management, etc.

A bond is a fixed income instrument. It refers to a loan made by an investor to a borrower, usually a corporate or government.

Bonds traditionally pay investors a fixed interest rate (coupon).

Green bonds enhance the issuer's reputation. Because it helps demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development.

Ability to meet commitments for signatories to climate agreements and other green commitments.

India's Intended Nationally Determined Contribution document sets out the stated objectives for India's contribution to climate improvement and pursuing a low carbon path to progress.

Green bonds usually have a lower interest rate than loans offered by commercial banks.

This will help in reducing the cost of raising capital as foreign investors shift their focus towards green investments.


3. Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh Retd inaugurated the 42nd International Congress of Indian National Cartographic Association at Dehradun. The National Hydrographic Office is organizing the 42nd International Congress from November 9 to November 11, 2022 at Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

4. Indian Railways has reportedly completed 82 percent electrification of its broad gauge network. The national transporter said it has achieved electrification of 1,223 route km till October 2022 in the financial year 2022-23 compared to 895 route km for the financial year 2021-22.

The Railways is constantly striving to achieve net zero carbon emissions to become the world's largest green railway by 2030. Indian Railways' ambitious plan to electrify its entire broad gauge network will result in better fuel efficiency, lower fuel costs and also save valuable foreign exchange, the ministry said.

Of the 65,141 RKM broad gauge network of Indian Railways as on 31 October, 53,470 BG RKM has been electrified. This is 82.08 percent of the total BG network.

It is noteworthy that the record electrification of 6,366 RKMs has been achieved in the history of Indian Railways in 2021-22. Earlier, the highest electrification in 2020-21 was 6,015 RKM.


5. Eat Right Station' Certification

Food Safety and Standard Association of India has awarded Bhopal Railway Station with 4-Star Eat Right Station Certification for providing high quality and nutritious food to passengers. Railway stations are awarded the certificate after being rated on a scale of 1 to 5 for food storage and hygiene practices by FSSAI empaneled third party audit agency. FSSAI is a large-scale effort to transform the country's food system to provide safe, healthy and sustainable food to all Indians.

Chandigarh Railway Station is the fifth Indian railway station to receive 5 star Eat Right station certification in September 2021.

Other railway stations with this certification include Anand Vihar Terminal Railway Station-Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Mumbai as well as Mumbai Central Railway Station-Mumbai and Vadodara Railway Stations.

6. Odisha Millet Day:

Odisha State Government is observing November 10, 2022 as Millet Day in the state. According to the Hindu calendar, the 1st Thursday of the month of Margasira is chosen. The primary objective of celebrating this day is to promote millets as a highly nutritious and environmentally friendly food product. This program started in 7 districts till now it has reached 19 districts of Odisha. Besides, the government aims to promote millet mission in 30 districts of Odisha.

300 crores to promote millet as a nutritional food grain in 2011-12 under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana of the Government of India to revive millet cultivation. In view of the nutritional value of millets, in April, 2018, millet was declared as a nutritional cereal and the year was celebrated as National Millet Year. The Government of India proposed to the United Nations to create domestic and global demand and provide nutritious food to the people.

Millets have traditionally formed a significant part of the food and cropping system in the tribal areas of Odisha. To revive the inclusion of millets in the diet, the Odisha government launched the Odisha Millet Mission in 2017.

Mission was started in 30 blocks in 7 districts in 2017. Successfully implemented in 84 blocks in 15 districts by 2021. It is set to expand to 142 blocks in 19 districts by 2022-23. The program started with 8,030 farmers who cultivated millet on 7,444 acres.

Further, the agriculture department plans to expand by 81,700 hectares in 2022-23. OMM has also improved the involvement of women-led self-help groups. SHGs are heavily involved in the millet value chain from processing, value addition and marketing


7. ASEAN India Friendship Year:

The year 2022 has been declared as ASEAN India Friendship Year as ASEAN and India commemorate 30 years of partnership. As part of this programme, an Indian media delegation is visiting Singapore and Cambodia under the ASEAN INDIA media exchange program from November 8 to November 13.

In the first leg of the tour the delegation visited the Singapore-India Chambers of Commerce and Industries and exchanged views on issues such as India Singapore relations with a specific focus on pro-business policies and business prospects.
